We take this study even further and add a presentation (through information, maps and photographs) of the routes he used between the known cities.

St. Paul's routes are a theme that most Commentaries and Atlases leave in a cloudy and vague state, drawing inaccurate lines on maps that perplex a potential step-by-step follower, photographer, or student of St. Paul's journeys. From this site you can be prepared to actually travel and cover some or all of his routes or you can do a fascinating couch journey through our presented material. In both cases, we are happy to have you around, as an actual or virtual follower of St. Paul's journeys and routes.

Your journey starts from Paul's Harmony Chart (or H-Chart).

Thank you for your interest!

Ioannis E. After a sleepless night at Troas, Paul decides to walk more than 10 hours to Assos rather than board the ship where his companions are. In a typical Jesus fashion who used to withdraw himself into the desert and pray, Paul prefers the difficult and lonely prayer walk than the easy coastal ship ride with his companions.

The waypoints are accurate, placed on the ancient route. However you will notice on the map a deviation of the track from the waypoints. The track shown is a car route and thus an approximation of the ancient route, since some ancient route points are difficult/impossible to access by car. With a 4x4 vehicle and some hiking, you can visit most if not all of the waypoints. The specific points A-F along the Satnioeis river have been chosen to designate the ancient route segment by the river, because they offer relatively good accessibility.

Troas [by Dalyan, TR] {N39.758051 E26.142475}--Waypoint: Troas harbor

Coastal arc to Kolonai {N39.724899 E26.156606}--Waypoint: Middle of arc

Kolonai [Beşiktepe, TR]~{N39.68466667 E26.16550000}--Waypoint: Coffee shop with tables of ancient materials

Coastal arc to Larisa {N39.650115 E26.162260}--Waypoint: Middle of arc

Acheloos river mouth {N39.630065 E26.152066}

Larisa [Limantepe, in Troad, TR] {N39.61600000 E26.14616667}

Coastal arc to Satnioeis rivermouth {N39.601956 E26.133717}

Satnioeis river mouth [Tuzla Cay, TR] {N39.583801 E26.108407}

Ancient route leaves coast [at Kumbaglar port, TR] {N39.558392 E26.097333}

East of Hamaxitos  [Beşiktepe, Gülpınar, TR] {N39.545174 E26.103646}

Smintheion [Külahlı, Gülpınar, TR] {N39.536000 E26.117500}

Along Satnioeis river point A {N39.528508 E26.178490}

Along Satnioeis river point B {N39.527163 E26.210215}

Along Satnioeis river point C {N39.530486 E26.250846}

Along Satnioeis river point D {N39.524925 E26.286489}

Along Satnioeis river point E {N39.504823 E26.296169}

Along Satnioeis river point F {N39.499899 E26.318183}

Assos [Behramkale, TR] {N39.486200 E26.340873}--Waypoint: harbor
Download to view 3D in Google Earth Foreign scholars like Holzner, usually consider Peiraieus the disembarkation point. We follow here the theory of Biris. Different ancient sources connect the altar(s) to unknown gods with this route. Specifically, since the modern Church of Aghioi Theodoroi is built at an ancient well stop for refreshing the travelers, and on the remains of ancient altars, its seems probable that the altar(s) of the unknown gods were there, welcoming the foreigners (with their foreign religions) coming from Faliron.

The walking route from Peiraieus port to the Athens Agora along the Long Walls (actually the reverse of it, from Agora to Peiraieus) could have been followed by Paul at this instance or if he had chosen the sea route to Corinth on his 2nd MJ, after his Athens visit (Acts 18:1). See here.

The weird Greek names are mostly street names, don't let them confuse you. The H-Chart
The starting point and core of this site is the H-Chart, a detailed Harmony chart that presents Paul's life and travels, blending and paralleling information from the book of Acts and Paul's Epistles. You are welcome to make good use of it, as it is designed to bring your own study of Paul's journeys to a new level of overview and comprehension.
[progress of this task: complete]

2. Inserting/highlighting the routes in the H-Chart
You will notice that some sections of the H-Chart appear in turquoise highlighted cells. These turquoise cells contain Paul's routes that he used to travel from place to place. Therefore we also call them route cells.
[progress of this task: complete]

3. Make the turquoise cells [the route cells] clickable
Our desire for the H-Chart is to be fully clickable. We will start from the turquoise route cells, so when you click on them, the corresponding route will be presented on a new page, with a list and map of the route sites it contained.
[progress of this task: working now on it]

4. Make the city cells and the route sites clickable
Besides task nr. 3, what remains to become clickable are the known cities in the H-Chart (Ephesus, Athens, Antioch, Thessalonica, Philippi, Jerusalem, Iconium, etc) and the route sites that appear after you click on the turquoise route cells. Our intention is to transform all these site names to links and present every site (whether a known city mentioned in Acts or a route city/site) on a new page.
[progress of this task: will start working on it, after nr. 3 has reasonably progressed]

5. Complete photographic record of Paul's cities, ports and routes
Our major intention (beside the publication of related products and prints) is to establish a complete photographic record of St. Paul's cities, ports and route sites. We have worked toward this aim for several years and we intend to go on. You will be able to view samples of this photographic record in this site. Abundant photographic material is/will be available in our products and prints. (upper regions). The theories that the term "upper regions" could mean the Northern Provinces (Bithynia, Pontus and Mysia) which Paul missed during the 2nd MJ (Acts 16:7-8), seem to us for the time being too stretched and not very convincing.

We investigated this route in 2007 and in 2009. In 2007 we traveled our own - but premature - version of this route, which we updated in 2009, taking in consideration Schnabel's suggestion (Early Christian Mission, p. 1200 ff.). Once someone actually travels the route, he might feel, as we did, that Schnabel introduces three detours, a long one that unnecessarily reaches as far as Temenouthyrai [Usak], a short one through Eumeneia [Isikli] as one leaves Apameia [Dinar] and another short one through Metropolis [Yeniköy], as one approaches Ephesus. Therefore, we present both options here, Schnabel's unaltered version first and as second our more direct route version. Both are car routes passing by the ancient route waypoints. Several routes of St. Paul are not mentioned in our sources (the book of Acts and Paul's Epistles) and only the start and end point of the route segment is mentioned, (e.g. they, passing on from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia). Other routes are mentioned in detail (Philippi-Amphipolis-Apollonia-Thessalonica) and others are vaguely mentioned (e.g. passing through the island [of Cyprus]). Others are not mentioned at all but are obvious and had to be inserted.

Sometimes the route choice is unique and therefore obvious, at other instances Paul's chosen route is a matter of investigation or even speculation. In any case, the recorded, vaguely recorded or unrecorded routes that we have highlighted/inserted into the chart are based on our study of Paul's routes and are displayed in fully colored turquoise cells. These are clickable and once clicked, they open new pages where every route is further described, analyzed and the (probable) route sites/cities are listed.

Other colors in the chart
Additionally, in the H-Chart, Paul's Epistles appear in orange text, his post-conversion visits to Jerusalem appear in blue text, the assassination plots against him in red text, and the Ephesus distresses in purple text.

The H-chart follows the South Galatian theory and Ramsay's theory on Paul's Jerusalem visits.

From Neapolis to Philippi

Neapolis [Kavala, GR]
Fons Co [Stavros, GR]~

Terms of service

All images of this site and of any linked site are copyrighted. Any unauthorized use constitutes a Federal offense with great penalties (up to $150,000).
