After a sleepless night at Troas, Paul decides to walk more than 10 hours to Assos rather than board the ship where his companions are. In a typical Jesus fashion who used to withdraw himself into the desert and pray, Paul prefers the difficult and lonely prayer walk than the easy coastal ship ride with his companions.

The waypoints are accurate, placed on the ancient route. However you will notice on the map a deviation of the track from the waypoints. The track shown is a car route and thus an approximation of the ancient route, since some ancient route points are difficult/impossible to access by car. With a 4x4 vehicle and some hiking, you can visit most if not all of the waypoints. The specific points A-F along the Satnioeis river have been chosen to designate the ancient route segment by the river, because they offer relatively good accessibility.
Foreign scholars like Holzner, usually consider Peiraieus the disembarkation point. We follow here the theory of Biris. Different ancient sources connect the altar(s) to unknown gods with this route. Specifically, since the modern Church of Aghioi Theodoroi is built at an ancient well stop for refreshing the travelers, and on the remains of ancient altars, its seems probable that the altar(s) of the unknown gods were there, welcoming the foreigners (with their foreign religions) coming from Faliron.

The walking route from Peiraieus port to the Athens Agora along the Long Walls (actually the reverse of it, from Agora to Peiraieus) could have been followed by Paul at this instance or if he had chosen the sea route to Corinth on his 2nd MJ, after his Athens visit (Acts 18:1). See here.

The weird Greek names are mostly street names, don't let them confuse you. You can walk on this route if it's not too hot, it's less than 9 km long.
We therefore provide here the three separate links. Most territory of the 1st segment belongs to Syria and Cilicia, Luke does not mention the passing through these territories, as it is obvious.
The theories that the term "upper regions" could mean the Northern Provinces (Bithynia, Pontus and Mysia) which Paul missed during the 2nd MJ (Acts 16:7-8), seem to us for the time being too stretched and not very convincing.

We investigated this route in 2007 and in 2009. In 2007 we traveled our own - but premature - version of this route, which we updated in 2009, taking in consideration Schnabel's suggestion (Early Christian Mission, p. 1200 ff.). Once someone actually travels the route, he might feel, as we did, that Schnabel introduces three detours, a long one that unnecessarily reaches as far as Temenouthyrai [Usak], a short one through Eumeneia [Isikli] as one leaves Apameia [Dinar] and another short one through Metropolis [Yeniköy], as one approaches Ephesus. Therefore, we present both options here, Schnabel's unaltered version first and as second our more direct route version. Both are car routes passing by the ancient route waypoints. They are calculated by Garmin software with shorter distance setting.
A Harmony results when information from complementary sources is paralleled and blended. In this case the sources are the book of Acts and Paul's Epistles (Letters) to various 1st c. AD Christian congregations or individuals.

Notes on using the H-Chart:
Please notice the Tabs under the H-Chart, click on them and you get to see the various stages of Paul's travels, during his Pre-Conversion years, during his Post-Conversion years and his 5 Missionary Journeys.

If you click on the chart, you can scroll up and down in it, if necessary.

The turquoise cells
These are the route cells, containing Paul's routes from place to place. Several routes of St. Paul are not mentioned in our sources (the book of Acts and Paul's Epistles) and only the start and end point of the route segment is mentioned, (e.g. they, passing on from Perga, came to Antioch of Pisidia). Other routes are mentioned in detail (Philippi-Amphipolis-Apollonia-Thessalonica) and others are vaguely mentioned (e.g. passing through the island [of Cyprus]). Others are not mentioned at all but are obvious and had to be inserted.

Sometimes the route choice is unique and therefore obvious, at other instances Paul's chosen route is a matter of investigation or even speculation. In any case, the recorded, vaguely recorded or unrecorded routes that we have highlighted/inserted into the chart are based on our study of Paul's routes and are displayed in fully colored turquoise cells. These are clickable and once clicked, they open new pages where every route is further described, analyzed and the (probable) route sites/cities are listed.

Other colors in the chart
Additionally, in the H-Chart, Paul's Epistles appear in orange text, his post-conversion visits to Jerusalem appear in blue text, the assassination plots against him in red text, and the Ephesus distresses in purple text.

The H-chart follows the South Galatian theory and Ramsay's theory on Paul's Jerusalem visits.I.E.K.http://www.blogger.com/profile/15357054657628017241noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3641193494711125020.post-45557762038229528322009-05-16T14:05:00.006+02:002009-09-24T15:05:34.910+02:00From Neapolis to PhilippiNeapolis [Kavala, GR]
